Pool filter cartridges are the easiest pool filter systems to understand. With these swimming pool filters the water passes through a filter material and the debris stays in the filter allowing clean water to flow back into the swimming pool. This is very similar to the water filtering equipment that you have in your home. The cartridges can clean a much larger area than the regular sand filters and they don't clog up as easily, which means you don't have to clean them out as often.

Types of replacement cartridges

There are two types of cartridges that you can use in your pool filters. The one you choose depends on the amount of money you want to pay and how often you want to replace the cartridge.

• An inexpensive cartridge is very easy to replace in the pool, but they do not last very long
• More expensive cartridges will last about five years before you need to buy a replacement.

In both cases, the cartridge filters are designed to operate at a lower level of pressure than the sand filters. You should clean the filters at least twice during the summer season and you only have to use your regular hose with the sprayer attached.
