Do You Have Enough Pool Chlorine?

Pool chlorine is very efficient and necessary for killing the bacteria and algae in the water. This is an essential step in keeping your pools water sparkling clean. Since chlorine is a gas, it has to be combined with another chemical to make it into a solid suitable for use as swimming pool chlorine. It should be regularly fed into the pool water and tested daily. The chemicals a pool needs to maintain the required standards differ from pool to pool - and day to day.

The three main types of chlorine used in the water of swimming pools are:

  • Granular Chlorine
  • Trichlor Tablets
  • Unstabilized

The granular chlorine is, as the name suggests, in granules and you put it right into the water in the pool. The tablets are designed so that you put them into the automatic skimmer. The unstabilized chlorine us used when you really want to give the water a boost and clear out all the bacteria. This is usually done when you open up the pool for the first time in the spring after being closed up all winter. It is important to use the unstabilized chlorine at least twice a month to make sure you family's health does not suffer by swimming in the pool.

How to know when you need chlorine?

It is not a good idea to use extra doses of the granular chlorine or the tablets to give your swimming pool a good cleaning. In fact, this will actually harm the water by raising the levels of chlorine and adding cyuranic acid to the water. The smell of chlorine around a swimming pool is natural, but the fact is that if you get a strong smell of chlorine, there is not enough chlorine in the water. What you smell is the chloramines that form when there is not enough free chlorine in the water to interact with the ammonia and other compounds.

Too much chlorine in the water can cause skin and eye irritations and too little chlorine in your swimming pool will let the bacteria and algae build up casing disease and cloudy water. Even if the water is clear, you need to test it on a regular basis to make sure that it has the right amount of chlorination.
